Immaterial Figures
These stylised icons and human figures illustrate the clever use of negative space and shadow, with the bright reflection of polished metals. Johannes portrays the nobility of religious iconography, alongside stylised yet incredibly human shapes. His figures are silhouetted in poses to suggest the emotion of the pieces, projecting the warmth of gestures between the coupled icons, and the joys of family and love in others. Johannes illustrates depths of compassion and understanding with his demonstrations of longing and solitude, perfectly encapsulating the pain, grief and loneliness displayed in some of his single figures. Negative space and light-shadows are essential (form) parts (part) of the sculptures; the human shapes are filled with light and darkness, the sun and the stars, clouds and blue skies. The emptiness of the figures is ready to be filled with everything present.
